Levi's Light Artillery The battery was organized on April 1, 1863 from disbanded troops of the Virginia State Line. When General Alfred Jackson cashiered Captain Levi in February 1864 1st Lt. Barr assumed command as Captain on March 22, 1864. the battery was separated from the Legion in June 1864, and remained behind at Saltville through the summer and fall. When James R Love and his detachment of the Legion returned to East Tennessee from the Valley of Virginia in December the battery was reported serving under Colonel Thomas as late as March 10, 1865. Thomas personally commanded Company C and D while the rest of Thomas' Legion was assigned elsewhere. Twenty Cherokee Indians also served as Col. Thomas' personal bodyguard. They were not part of Thomas' Legion. Company A - Infantry - Indian Company Roster Assigned to Love's Regiment, 2nd Co. A, in 1865 transferred to Indian Battalion. For a Roster see Love's Regiment, B Co. Company C - Infantry - Indian Company (1863) This unit originally was an independent Company, commanded by Col. Thomas and not part of the Confederate Army. It officially became part of Thomas' Legion in 1863. Capt. Campbell Taylor Number of Officers and men, 90 Indians, No roster has been found. Company D - Infantry - Indian Company (1864) Capt. Black Fox Number of Officers and men, 30 Indians, No Roster has been found. |
